Revelation 3: “Nibiru Approach/Collision”
«There will be in heaven the appearance of a comet that will bring very abrupt physical transformations to our planet. Based on their calculations, the Mayans assure that there are high probability that the comet will collide with Earth«
* extracted from the supposed 7 Mayan prophecies.
This prediction is perhaps the most "manipulated" and distorted of all, because it even intertwines with another pseudoscientific issue. Here the Mayans supposedly prophesize that a comet will approach (or collide with) the Earth, bringing horrible catastrophes for life, from total extinction to the reversal of the magnetic field (although in other versions this is cited as an independent scenario) that leaves us exposed to lethal radiation. Let's see: Nibiru is one of several names that have been given to a hypothetical object called Planet, a body that interacts with the Solar System but has not yet been detected due to its great distance. It is also known as Marduk (Babylonian mythology), Wormwood (biblical references) or Barnard I (by astronomical name), but is better known as Hercolubus, and its popularity arose from 1999, with the appearance of the book "Hercolubus or Red Planet» by VM Rabolú (a follower of the gnostic and esoteric Samael Aun Weor).
Given that I already have a article demystifying Hercolubus, I am not going to delve into this topic, except to highlight, in a few words, that this supposed object may be a simple misinterpretation of the Barnard's Star (Barnard I, V2500 Oph), a red dwarf star in the constellation Ophiuchus characterized by its rapid annual apparent motion (10.3″), which will take it 3.8 light years from Earth in 8,000 years, and become the closest star to the Solar System, surpassing the Alpha Centauri system.
Last conclusions.
I feel sorry for the Mayans. They were an extraordinary, complex culture with a vast wealth of knowledge, but perhaps none of them imagined the scope and benefits that would come at the cost of their work, several centuries later, and their inability to defend themselves - from the grave - from misinterpretations. December 21, 2012 was seen as the new "key date" for Humanity, just as January 1, 2000 once was, among others. The truth is that an objective analysis is enough to realize that this date has nothing special and that the Mayans, far from being prophets, were only great observers, to the point that their records have survived to this day.
A couple of final anecdotes: In 2006 I traveled to Chichen Itza, where I met some of the main Mayan legacies. While the guide explained the history of the Kukulcan Castle, a tourist asked him a question about 2012. The guide, without hesitation, gave broadly the same explanations that I have given here, collapsing the illusions of that tourist, but being honest with this culture and without taking advantage of the fame of 2012 that could well have meant... more tourists! This attitude sums up what I am trying to convey: that the Mayans deserve better recognition than being relegated to the agenda of unscrupulous apocalypse charlatans.
The other is that in 2009 I launched a bet on my blog, offering $1,000,000 Chilean pesos (~ USD 1,600), to whom I will scientifically prove that an apocalypse will occur on 12-21-2012 prophesied by the Mayans! As expected, nothing special happened, but many gullible people dared the challenge!
