{"id":6541,"date":"2022-11-20T19:55:13","date_gmt":"2022-11-20T22:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/austrinus.com\/?p=6541"},"modified":"2025-01-17T05:04:34","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T08:04:34","slug":"orientacion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/austrinus.com\/en\/orientacion\/","title":{"rendered":"Celestial orientation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A key concept to orient yourself: the celestial vault.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding the celestial vault is essential to be able to correctly imagine what is happening in the sky, as well as to have the appropriate notions in application cases (e.g. astrophotography).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on our latitude, then, we will see the stars move differently in the sky, as will be explained in the following examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you were at the North Pole<\/strong> (<strong>90\u00ba N<\/strong>) all the stars will appear to be rotating around the north celestial pole towards the zenith (just above your head), and during the night the stars never rise or set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you were at the equator<\/strong> (<strong>0\u00ba<\/strong>), you will be aligned perpendicular to the Earth&#039;s axis of rotation. From your point of view, the stars move in a straight line, rising from the East, moving and setting in the West. When observing the sky in the direction of this point, we will notice that the stars around seem to describe concentric circles, which is clearly evidenced when taking a long exposure astrophotography. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"402\" src=\"http:\/\/austrinus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ejemplo-polo-celeste-600x402-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6565 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/austrinus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ejemplo-polo-celeste-600x402-1.png 600w, https:\/\/austrinus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ejemplo-polo-celeste-600x402-1-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Northern Hemisphere, it is easy to find this point because it is very close to the star Polaris (\u03b1 Ursae Minoris), magnitude 1.9; while in the Southern Hemisphere, in the absence of a nearby bright star (the nearest star is Polaris Australis, \u03c3 Octantis, magnitude 5.4), a mnemonic that uses the nearby constellation of the Southern Cross is often used to find this spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 30%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>celestial equator<\/strong><br>It is the Earth&#039;s equator projected in the sky, that is, in its same plane, inclined at 23\u00ba with respect to the plane of the ecliptic.
