This topic is one of the most fanciful that can be found floating around on the Internet. However, for a time it had a certain "pogee" in Chile, and specifically in my city I found more than one poster pasted on walls and kiosks, announcing "informative talks", supporting and warning the public about this subject. There is even a book for sale, which is freely promoted on the web.\u00a0www.hercolubus.cl<\/strong><\/a>; Sometimes dissimilar versions circulate on the Internet about Hercolubus, but below I quote the most widespread and commented version about this false planet that threatens the Earth:<\/p>\n

The planet Hercolobus is a giant about 6 times larger than Jupiter, belonging to the Tylo or Tyler system and with an orbit of 35,000 years around the Sun (although in some versions it is cited as 13,000 years); In its orbit it reaches ~500,000 km from Earth, and specifically on August 11, 1999, Hercolobus will reach that fateful point with disastrous consequences for our planet, including earthquakes, tsunamis, epidemics and even a deviation of the earth's axis.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Science says...<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Although the versions vary slightly in terms of the proportions of the planet, its orbit time and the moment in which it would reach us, it is not difficult to make an analysis regarding the inconsistencies of this pseudotheory. Perhaps supported by recent discoveries of extrasolar planets, a reinterpretation of biblical scriptures or simple ignorance, it has been postulated that Hercolubus is a giant planet 5 or 6 times the mass of Jupiter, inevitably approaching Earth. It is no coincidence that in\u00a0none<\/em>\u00a0No reference to this enormous planet mentions the celestial coordinates to find it in the sky, even though NASA has supposedly acknowledged its existence, as well as several astronomers. In fact, and in an incredible effort to try to avoid its refutation, some versions even cite that Hercolubus is composed of a "light-absorbing material" that "keeps it out of the visible spectrum"; in other words, it would also be invisible...<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Let's think about it for a moment. A giant planet approaching Earth, in some versions cited for 1999, in others for 2005 (past tense), remaining between 10 million and 500,000 km from Earth, would be perfectly visible from Earth. Even without celestial coordinates, a body 5-6 times larger than Jupiter would be very bright in the night sky. Being a gas planet, one might think that its atmosphere is probably composed of hydrogen and helium and has characteristics similar to a "five-fold" Jupiter; then its albedo would also be similar to that of Jupiter, and therefore it would reflect the light of the Sun with similar intensity; ergo, if Hercolubus were as close as Jupiter (which is about 778,000,000 km from the Sun), it would shine at a magnitude of -10, almost 3 times brighter than Venus.<\/p>\n

\"\"If it were about 10 million km away, its apparent size would be monstrous. Even if this planet were not noticeable in the visible range, it would be noticeable in the infrared, and it would be easily identified with the Spitzer space telescope and similar technologies on Earth.<\/p>\n

Secondly, we have the supposed Tylo solar system (also referred to as Tylar). In the many references where Herc\u00f3lubus is mentioned, there is not a single image that shows the precise location of this supposed system, from which both the supposed Herc\u00f3lubus could be observed as it approaches us, as well as the other 5 planets that would also orbit this star. The only \u201castronomical map\u201d of the Tylo system available is the one that appears next to this text; logically, the only thing that can be seen are erratic orbits of a star that does not fit into any reference system: we do not know what type of star it is, in which constellation it is, its magnitude\u2026 nothing.<\/p>\n

\"\"Logically, in the absence of a minimal amount of evidence supporting the existence of said giant planet, there is no reason to assume that this theory is true. Apart from this, the available references in this regard are contradictory and none offer verifiable scientific data. However, after searching a little, there is a piece of information that can help us understand where this tremendous apocalyptic confusion came from: and that is that Hercolubus is not the only name by which this supposed giant planet is known; It is also known as\u00a0Nibiru<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0Wormwood<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0either\u00a0Barnard I<\/em><\/strong>. Name\u00a0Wormwood<\/em>\u00a0It appears in biblical scriptures, and refers to a star that causes a huge catastrophe on Earth. It is not the idea of this section (nor do I consider it useful) to go into polemicizing a religious text, therefore I will only focus on the second meaning, Barnard I, which is actually more useful because it very possibly represents the origin of the Hercolubus myth.<\/p>\n

Barnard Star\u2026 the origin of the myth?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Barnard I (also called Barnard's Star) is a red dwarf star in the constellation Ophiuchus. It was discovered by astronomer Edward E. Barnard, and is a rather curious object in astronomy for two simple reasons: 1) it is the 2nd closest star to us (it is 5.9 light years away) after the Alpha Centauri triple system. (4.3 light years) and 2), is the star with the greatest apparent motion from Earth (10.29 arc seconds); It moves very quickly at about 105 km\/s in our direction, so it is expected that in about 8,000 years it will be 3.8 light years away and become the closest star to us, surpassing the Alpha CEN system.<\/p>\n

It is slightly larger than Jupiter and has a magnitude of +9.5, so a telescope is needed to see it. Due to a quality of red dwarf stars, their chemical reactions cause them to emit very little light and are objects only visible through a telescope (this could be why Herc\u00f3lubus is "invisible" or why it is also known as the "red planet").<\/p>\n

In short, this is another of those typical cases in which a false astronomical event is intended to be used to announce a supposed catastrophe on Earth; based on the absence of verifiable data, although more likely a disguised villain presentation of the Barnard star.
