It emerged (among other cultures) with the Greeks, who conceived the zodiac, a set of 12 constellations characterized by being located on the ecliptic, the imaginary line through which the Sun, Moon and planets also circulate. Each zodiac sign covers a space of 30 days, an interval in which the Sun circulates through each constellation. It is very important to clarify that the zodiac emerged around 2,000 BC, and at that time the constellations effectively corresponded to their original 30-day period; will return to this later.

Pseudoscience says...

Depending on the date of birth of each person, depending on the constellation where the Sun is located, the zodiac sign that will govern their destiny for their entire life corresponds; This fact, added to the movement of the stars, will determine the personality of the person and will influence them according to their sign, allowing them to predict their future in various areas (love, work, health, etc.).

Science says...

In addition to the well-known terrestrial movements of rotation and translation, there are other more subtle and practically imperceptible movements, but existing and one of vital importance for this matter: precession. Precession is a slow pitching of the Earth's axis, very similar to the wobble of a top when it is about to stop.

This wobble of the axis traces a complete circumference in 25,800 years. Now, note that 25.800/12= 2.150; That is, each twelfth of this circumference is equivalent to 2,150 years, therefore the wobble produces a change in the position of the celestial poles and the plane of the equator.

In other words, due to a displacement of 50.25″ annually of the constellations in the ecliptic, it can be said that our current view of the zodiacal constellations is shifted regarding how they looked at the time they were conceived for the generation of horoscopes. It was just mentioned that at that time the zodiac coincided with the period of days that we see today in a traditional horoscope (e.g. Gemini between 05/22 and 06/21, Aquarius from 01/21 to 02/19, etc.); but this lasted until approximately the year 150 AD, since after 1/12 of the precession movement (2,150 years) had elapsed, the displacement generated is equivalent to a shift of one month and is enough for each zodiac sign to be shifted. Since logically all current inhabitants of the Earth were born within the last 2,150 years, their true "sign" (in the vast majority of cases) is the one before the one they usually see published on TV and in newspapers.

Ophiuchus constellation

Furthermore, it may be surprising to know that the zodiacal constellations are not twelve. Given that the zodiacal constellations occupy the same area of the sky where we see the ecliptic (imaginary plane that contains the Earth's orbit and where we see the Sun, Moon and planets circulate), Ophiuchus, located between Scorpio and Sagittarius (in fact, the ecliptic covers a larger area of Ophiuchus than of Scorpio); On the other hand, depending on the interpretation, Cetus could also be included as 14°, since although the ecliptic does not pass within its limits, it is very close (less than 1/4 of a degree), which is why some planets, Asteroids, the Moon and even part of the Sun transit very briefly within the limits of this constellation.

That is not all. By about 2300 AD another twelfth of the precessional motion will have been completed, and the signs will therefore be "shifted" by two positions (and so on); if the horoscope is still valid in future generations, people will be doubly deceived. Note that up to now, I have not even referred to the postulate that planetary movements influence people; I have merely stated that the very basis of the horoscope is wrong and outdated, with no validity in our time.

Below is the real 'zodiac' with their current date periods.

ARIES

from April 18 to May 13

TAURUS

from May 13 to June 20

GEMINI

from June 20 to July 19

CANCER

from July 19 to August 9

LEO

from August 9 to September 15

VIRGO

from September 15 to October 30

POUND

from October 30 to November 22

SCORPION

from November 22 to November 29

¡OFIUCHUS!

from November 29 to December 15

SAGITTARIUS

from December 15 to January 19

CAPRICORN

from January 19 to February 16

AQUARIUM

from February 16 to March 11

PISCES

from March 11 to April 17

CETUS

from March 27 (2 p.m.) to March 28 (2 p.m.) within Pisces

The case of Pluto

There is still time to mention one more detail: since it is not worth dwelling on the fact that planets have no influence on us, I want to highlight an aspect that ends up bringing astrology down even further. On August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) issued resolutions regarding the official definition of "planet" due to controversies generated by the discovery of certain objects beyond Pluto.

The result was that our Solar System today consists of 8 planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune - 5 dwarf planets - Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Makemake, Haumea - and the minor bodies of the Solar System. Pluto was demoted from its "planet" status and is now classified as a "dwarf planet" along with Ceres (previously the largest asteroid in the belt between Mars and Jupiter), Eris, Makemake and Haumea (the latter being farther away than Pluto).

To be or not to be a planet... that is the question

What can astrology say about this? They have got into trouble. Either they admit that in the 76 years that Pluto was considered a planet they were wrong, and they should not have considered it in their "calculations", or they admit that they were also wrong because in this time they should have considered Ceres, Eris, Makemake and Haumea, since they supposedly also "influence" people. Although the simplest thing would be to recognize that there are *millions* of objects lurking in the Solar System, that defining what is called a "planet", "dwarf planet", "satellite" or "asteroid" only has to do with a series of technicalities and only helps us to better classify our Universe, but even better, to recognize that "cosmic influences" are nonexistent and are based on arbitrary data.

Physics recognizes four forces that govern the entire Universe, called fundamental forces: strong and weak nuclear interaction, gravity and electromagnetism. By doing some analysis, it is not difficult to realize that the force of a finger rocking a baby's cradle exerts much more "influence" than that of any planet millions of kilometers away.

The topic goes a long way, but it would be unnecessary to continue. With these reasonings it should be clear why the horoscope is not valid, as well as astrology in general. This ancient mixture of science, religion and beliefs slowly split over time, and although astrology is still important historically due to its origin practically simultaneous with astronomy, the latter took its own path and is what tells us today the scientific reality about the celestial bodies, of which we marvel so much.

«The horoscope predicts your future…» The horoscope is the best-known expression of astrology.
